OVERVIEW
The Count of Monte Cristo (French Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas. It is often considered to be, along with The Three Musketeers, Dumas's most popular work. He completed the work in 1844. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from the plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet.
The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. An adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness, it tells of a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune and sets about getting revenge on the men who destroyed his life. However, his plans also have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty.
The book is considered a literary classic today. According to Luc Sante, "The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western civilization's literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood."

This book was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Beautiful, gripping, amazing story.
5 Stars Review Jamie Dickey - Goodreads
One of the top 10 books in history. About to get married, Edmond Dantes, is betrayed by his supposed friend who secretly wants his wife. Taken to an impenetrable island prison off the coast of France reserved for political prisoners Edmond meets an intriguing fellow prisoner that tells him a secret that will change his life.
5 Stars Review Allen Lee - Goodreads
LOVE. A classic, no doubt. Such a perfect blend of adventure, revenge, love, and growth.
5 Stars Review Brittany Spicely - Goodreads
The Count of Monte Cristo is by a wonderful surprise. WHen you hear that a classic is the "best" and you're made to read it in school you have this automatic tick that the book will be boring and will try to portray the theme of life as they knew it. Yet some classics just fall flat with me - not The Count of Monte Cristo. This book blew me away with it's lyrical writing and beautiful bonds. The emotion was real and the story was a never ending twist of murder adventure and betrayal. It leaves you with this nagging feeling that you have to know more or that nothing in this canvas is as simple as it seems. It's a daring adventure for its time and to be honset I haven't found a book as awesome as it yet. Nothing can compare o the awe and the saddness and the happiness I felt with these characters. And what really made me happy and cemented this story in my heart is that The Count and Mercedes don't end up together. They go their own course because they had really become different people by the time the book picks up. I truely wish that I could give this book more stars because it's wonderful.
